The Area

The Town of Scotia was originally built by the Pacific Lumber Company starting in 1884 as housing for the workers at the lumber mill. Within 3 years there were about 100 small homes all built with clear heart redwood. A company owned power plant supplies power to the entire town of Scotia.

Avenue of the Giants starts just four miles south of the park. This is an auto tour through the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. This 32 mile Avenue takes you through the heart of 52,000 acres of redwoods and 17,000 acres of old growth redwood forests. These trees are 400-600 years old. If you want to see serious redwood trees this is the place.

Eureka is the only big city in the area. It is the county seat and right on the Pacific Ocean with a nice harbor where all the fishing boats come and go. Eureka has most of the stores a person needs like Costco and a Harley-Davidson dealer at the north end of town.

Ferndale is a well preserved Victorian Village with lots of tourist attractions, shops and events. For over 40 years the Kinetic Grand Championship, also called the "Triathlon of the Art World," starts here. This is a three day cross country contest of human-powered amphibious all-terrain vehicles that race across sand, mud, pavement, a bay crossing, a river crossing and major hills, all done in artsy homemade vehicles. Several movies have been filmed there, the best known is Outbreak in 1995. Ferndale is 15 miles north. Take exit 691.

The "Lost Coast" This is a beautiful drive through the King Range National Conservation Area. It is a very remote area of northern California and you will pass through the most western point in the continental United States. . Go 4 miles south on 101 and take Exit 663, go west on Mattole Rd (211) toward Honeydew. This will take you through the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. After crossing the bridge at Honeydew (50 mi), turn right (north) and continue (15 mi) through Petrolia. After Petrolia you will come face to face with one of the most beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean. Continue on (30 mi) and you will come to Ferndale.
